Beijing Automobile International Corporation South Africa (BAICSA) unveiled its X25 SUV at the historic milestone launch. The event took place at the Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ), Zone 1, Beijing Automobile International Corporation South Africa (BAICSA) facilities on 24 July 2018. The event, which was attended by industry giants and the political elite, marked the celebration of the completion of  BAIC’s SKD (semi-knocked down) vehicles and the unveiling of the BAIC X25 SUV which is set to roll out at the assembly plant.

A live video feed, from Pretoria, where Honourable President Cyril Ramaphosa and Honourable President Xi Jinping, officially unveiled the BAIC X25 SUV with those present invited to sign the car on display. “This is a real milestone and we would like to congratulate you all at Coega and applaud you for the excellent work you have achieved. It is truly impressive and for us [as South Africa], this is a moment of celebration that finally BAIC is launching a product”, said President Ramaphosa. “I and President Xi Jinping are filled with pride to witness this historical moment. The whole of Africa is now open for you to produce all these vehicles and export them throughout Africa”, he continued.

President Xi Jinping echoed President Ramaphosa’s sentiments saying:” We are witnessing the first product of the first vehicle of BAIC in South Africa and I wish to extend our warm congratulations to you. This is the fruition of the agreement we signed years ago and it’s shown that we’ve kept our word”, he said.

 Marketing, Brand and Communications Unit Head, Dr. Ayanda Vilakazi, who has been at the forefront of the launch, expressed pride in the success of the project. “We are quite pleased with the event and the historic milestone that BAIC is celebrating”, he said.

BAIC announced their investment, worth R11 billion at Coega SEZ in 2016, making them the SEZ’s largest investor to date. The vehicle manufacturing plant located in Zone 1 will produce passenger vehicles such as the X25 Compact SUV whilst creating an expected 10 600 formal and informal job opportunities at full capacity. The plant has currently employed 1446 during the construction phase.
