The Coega Development Corporation (CDC) has awarded work opportunities to four (4) Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) based Small Micro Medium Enterprises (SMME). The work package for the newly established Customs Control Area Fencing is worth R5 million and is being rolled out in zone 1 and 2 of the Coega IDZ.

“Following the comments by the Finance Minister in his budget speech that SMMEs are recognised as important contributors to job creation and stimulators of economic growth, the CDC views SMMEs as important to our business success and operations, hence at every available opportunity we ensure that SMMEs benefit from Coega projects,” says Dr Ayanda Vilakazi, CDC unit head marketing & communications.

According to Morne Jegels one of the SMMEs involved in the project, “as small businesses we are delighted by the opportunities presented by the CDC to us, being appointed for this project will play a very decisive role in my company’s sustainability as well as gaining more experience and increased CIDB grades that will enable me to get more business opportunities.”

As a catalyst for championing of the socio-economic development in the Eastern Cape and in South Africa, the CDC adopted a policy to award a minimum of 35% of its procurement spend to SMMEs.

In conclusion, Dr Vilakazi highlights that “in the Financial Year 2015/16, the CDC exceeded its target of 35% and achieved 37.2 percent SMME procurement spend.”
