Gqeberha, 23 March 2021 – The Honourable Minister of Tourism, Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane officially opened the newly built four-star Bluewater Bay Sunrise Hotel (BWBSH) on Tuesday, 23 March 2021. The BWBSH brings to the people of Gqeberha (formally known as Port Elizabeth), the greater Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) and out of town South Africans & international visitors a diverse experience 10km away from the hustle and bustle of Gqeberha City, said Dr Ayanda Vilakazi, CDC’s Head of Marketing, Brand and Communications.

In her address, the honourable Minister Kubayi -Ngubane highlighted that the launch of this hotel contributes immensely to the strengthening of the supply side of the tourism market and congratulated the CDC for the investment they have made in this magnificent hotel.

"The development of this hotel is in close proximity to the Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and the Deepwater Port of Ngqura. This investment is in line with the tourism recovery plan that the department of Tourism in partnership with the private sector including strategic institutions such as this one (Coega) is implementing," said Kubayi-Ngubane.

"As we celebrate this milestone, we acknowledge that it marks the beginning of a new era for the CDC in the tourism industry. Tourism is one of the key priorities for the Eastern Cape because of its ability to uplift communities that is why the EC government supports this initiative," says the Eastern Cape MEC of Finance and Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Mlungisi Mvoko.

Whilst the hotel has been transformed from rubble after being acquired by the CDC (incomplete) into a pristine destination, it has provided business opportunities to local Small Micro Medium Enterprise’s (SMMEs) and Residents of the NMBM in terms of business and job opportunities. With the CDC’s vision to become the leading catalyst for the championing of socio economic development in line with the country’s National Development Plan (NDP) vision 2030, therefore the construction of the hotel served as an important socio-economic enabler for local SMMEs and job seekers, remarked Dr Vilakazi.

To this end, the hotel construction was spearheaded by a total of six (6) local SMMEs who were supervised and supported by the CDC’s internal project managers with years of experience in the field. The procurement spend on SMMEs was R52.1 million, which accounts for 72% SMME target percentage achieved (Total spent on the project was R72 million), well surpassing the 30% SMME target on projects; payments to Black Owned SMMEs was 93% and others was 7%. 50% of these SMMEs were women owned businesses. During the construction of the hotel, 379 construction jobs were created and currently the hotel has employed 30 people on a full-time basis. Therefore, the hotel has created a total of 409 jobs for the local communities, which are much needed, especially now amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which has shocked the economy of the country and the world at large, says Yashvir Jithoo.

The CDC is constantly breaking boundaries by diversifying non-SEZ business into new industries and markets to create alternative sources of revenue for financial sustainability, empower local businesses and job seekers, and to become a successful and truly internationally diverse business.
