Coega Retains Its Improved ISO Grading

Port Elizabeth, 14 August 2020 -
The Coega Development Corporation (CDC) announced today that it has received the International Organisation Standardization (ISO) grading, following a laborious surveillance audit on the CDC’s systems and processes which are utilized by the organisation to deliver international best practice business solutions to all our Clients locally in South Africa and Internationally, as part of the Coega Africa Programme.

The achievement comes after a week-long audit by independent auditors who have now certified the CDC on ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management Systems), ISO 14001:2015 (Environment Management Systems) and ISO 45001:2018 (Safety and Health Management Systems).

The ISO standards assess the organisation’s systems and best practice standards in place. “This achievement demonstrates to our clients- located within the Special Economic Zone and outside- our commitment to international best practices and standards. It validates our determination in ensuring innovation and continual improvement for the CDC and our Clients”, says the CDC SHEQ Unit Head, Ms. Viwe Biyana.

The CDC adopted a Safety, Health, Environment & Quality (SHEQ) Integrated Management Maturity model a couple of years ago, which has contributed to the achievements of the ISO standards. Some of the areas the organisation surpassed expectations, include but not limited to the management of CDC facilities and assets, which was found to be excellent, as well as the cooperation of all the personnel involved that was commendable. "Moreover, the compliance with Environmental Authorization which requires continual engagement with relevant stakeholders in the Environmental Liaison Committee and the Environmental Monitoring Committee in place were effective, not to mention the general management of the SHEQ integrated management system and its maturity, both of which were commendable,” adds Ms. Biyana.

“Whilst appreciating the positive inputs from the auditors, there were, of cause, areas which require ‘Observation and Opportunities for improvement, on which the organisation will therefore be focusing its energies,” highlights Ms. Biyana.

The CDC currently holds 5 (five) ISO standards due to the commitment of all employees and stakeholders who help maintain these standards every year. The organisation prioritizes adherence to international best practices and often goes beyond the requirements of legislation to deliver quality and superior service to all our internal and external Clients
