Coega congratulates Team SA for the successful hosting of the BRICS Summit

The 10th annual BRICS Summit was held in Johannesburg on the 25 - 27 July 2018. The summit brought together world leaders from China, India, Brazil, Russia and the rest of the world under the theme “BRICS in Africa: Collaboration for Inclusive Growth and Shared Prosperity in the 4th Industrial Revolution”. The theme is reflective of the core priorities of each one of the BRICS members, notably to strive towards the creation of an inclusive society and global partnerships that will bring prosperity to all humankind.

In his keynote address, President Ramaphosa highlighted the importance of collective collaboration as a template for success in the 4th Industrial Revolution. “We should focus on collaboration for inclusive growth and shared prosperity in the 4th industrial revolution”, said Ramaphosa. “This surge in innovation has the potential to dramatically improve productivity and to place entire countries on a new trajectory of prosperity. However, unless it is approached in a collaborative manner, rapid technological change could merely serve to entrench existing disparities within and between countries”, he continued. “Through our collective effort, by working together, I am certain that we will be able to confront the challenges and seize the opportunities that this new age of development presents”, he concluded.

President Ramaphosa and Chinese President Xi Jinping also took the time to congratulate BAIC SA on their milestone celebration held on the 24th of July. Speaking via satellite live streaming, President Ramaphosa praised BAIC SA and Coega for the sterling work done on achieving the said milestone by saying: “This is a real milestone and we would like to congratulate you all at Coega and applaud you for the excellent work you have achieved”, said Ramaphosa. “It is truly impressive and for us [as South Africa], this is a moment of celebration that finally BAIC is launching a product. “I and President Xi Jinping are filled with pride to witness this historical moment”, he continued.

Brand, Marketing and Communication Unit Head, Dr Ayanda Vilakazi commended the BRICS Summit on its contribution towards a positive sentiment on investment in the country. “The BRICS Summit has enabled us as a country to engage and collectively collaborate with the global economy to develop positive investment outputs such as the BAIC SA plant at Coega. It is through these efforts that the many investments we see at the SEZ have come to fruition”, he said.

Coega has also actively participated in the realisation of outputs from BRICS countries by having the largest square mile of Chinese automotive investment at the SEZ.  Amongst these investments is First Automotive Works (FAW), situated in zone 2 of the SEZ. The six hundred million (R600 mill) truck assembly has spent the greater part of 2017 raving up its export numbers to two hundred and twelve (212) units and is currently South Africa’s second biggest truck exporter.  And the recently launched R11 billion BAIC SA plant, which is the largest investment in the whole of Africa with an expected maximum annual production capacity of 100 000 units.

Ends.
